Also caught by the cameras, is the photographer himself, often as perplexed by the photographic process as the public is by the van. A tremendous amount of trial and error was needed before Harrod could get the results he was looking for, and still to this day, he is trying to upgrade his process. Generally, an assistant in the van will push the shutter button of each of the five working cameras while Harrod confirms that indeed each camera functions properly and that the lens is set on its wide angle setting etc. Of the thousands of pictures that have been taken, many are of Harrod being caught struggling to master his bizarre craft.
